Christmas Boat Parade of Lights and Christmas Party

The parade this year had only three boats in it but they were decorated to the hilt and enjoyed by the spectators at the jetty wall. The party was attended by about 60 NYC members and guests. The clubhouse was beautifully decorated by Marty Ellis and the meal catered by The Feral Pig was magnificent. See the photos HERE.

Halloween race results & party pix . . .

What FUN! If you weren't there you missed a really great time. Dick Olsen cooked up an AMAZING dinner and his Speedy crew decorated the clubhouse and served up the delicious meal. All of this followed the Costume Party Boat Race. The race itself was won by Fast Company and their boat also won the "best boat theme" prize (Crash Test Dummies) followed ever so closely by OZone (Star Wars) and Coyote (Noah's Ark). The band Gunga Lagunga played fantastic dance tunes and had the place rock'n & roll'n. See The Garden Island article and the HERE for MORE!!!

Fast Company wins the 2011 Gene Wells Memorial Series #6, six one takes 2nd place and Papa a'u takes 3rd. In CLUB Class Bonjolea comes in 1st, Speedy 2nd and Coyote takes 3rd. It was a great series with ten boats participating. See the Series Point Summary and the individual race scores on the RACING page. The NYC 2011 Racing Season is pau and the 2012 race schedule will begin in February. Keep an eye on the RACING page for details coming soon.

In the Gene Wells Memorial Race #6, six of the eight boats finished within five minutes of each other and only eight seconds separated 1st and 2nd place. The moderate trade winds held through the finish and Papa a'u corrected into 2nd place ahead of OZone who crossed the line 2nd. Fast Company got the win. Read all about it on the RACING page.

Race #5 of the Gene Wells Series saw Fast Company first over the finish line for the win giving her a two point lead over OZone in the series with two races remaining. See the very close race scores on the RACING page.

OZone gets another 1st and Bonjolea comes in #2 in the Gene Wells Memorial Series Race #4. This is the half way point of this series and ten boats were on the course to enjoy light trades and lots of competition for this one. Be sure to read the details of this exciting race in The Garden Island and see the RACING page for the finish times and corrected scores.

Nine Boats came out to play for the third race of the GENE WELLS MEMORIAL SERIES. Mapuana was over the start line early and had to restart. Fast Company led the first lap but OZone over took her at the beginning of lap two and held that lead to the finish. See the race results on the RACING page.

Visitor Lucy Anthony stopped by the NYC clubhouse to make a burgee exchange and found Marcie Millett who was happy to do the honors and shoot a photo of the exchange. Lucy is from the Marina West YC in Fairfield California. She and husband John have a time share at Pono Kai. Visit Marina West YC here.

Gene Wells Memorial Series races #1 and #2 are in the books. Six boats started #1 and eight boats were on the line in #2. View the photos and read the exciting details of race #1 in the TGI Story on the RACING page and join the race committee at the Nawiliwili Jetty on Thursday 9/29 to watch race #3.

Marcie Millett steers Papa a'u to a Wahine Series win with a commanding point lead over the competition.  Read about it here. See the race results, the photo album and the series summary on the RACING page. OZone and Bonjolea tied for 2nd place but the tie went to OZone.

Bonjolea takes first place in Offshore Race #6. See the RACING page for the score sheet. The last two races of this year's Offshore Series take place over Labor Day Weekend. Offshore #7 on 9/3 leaves Nawiliwili at 0900 and will arrive in Hanalei around 1-2 p.m.  Greet the race crews at the Hanalei Pavilion. Bring something to BBQ and a potluck dish to share. OS #8 self-starts at 0900 on Monday 9/5 and boats should arrive at Nawiliwili around 1400 hours.

The Wahine Race #2 gave us a lot of excitement. Read the detailed story by Dennis Fujimoto HERE and see the race scores and photo album on the RACING page. Mahalo to Papa a'u crew for a fine dinner following the race.

The 3-Race Wahine Series got off to a great start with nine boats in the field and a wahine on every helm but for one. Joe Sager caught some great shots from the lighthouse and Papa a'u corrected to take the PHRF win. See the RACING page for scores and details.

The NYC Horse & Pony Series ended in a very tight race between horses and ponies. Coming into this last race, Papa a'u was ahead of Fast Company by three points. Fast Company took a second in this horse race and a first in this pony race closing the gap to only one point, but that still gave Papa a'u the victory. Read all about it in The Garden Island story by Dennis Fujimoto and see the pictures provided by Joe Sager and Sea Peterson. Find the scores and series summery HERE.

Horse & Pony #3 was a little tamer than the first two. The breeze was 10-15 knots. Speedy won the start but Fast Company finished first and Papa a'u corrected into first place. Ed Tschupp won the Pony race for Papa a'u. Read the details on the RACING page. Mahalo Joe Sager for the photos.

Fast Company's Horse finished first and her Pony finished second in the Horse and Pony race #2, giving her 3 points and the win over Papa a'u whose Pony finished first but whose Horse finished third. Lots of excitement. Lots of fun. See details, photos and race results on the RACING page.

Horse & Pony Race #1 was as much fun as we expected it to be. Five boats participated in the Horse Race and when they finished one crewman from each boat (Horse) raced a Laser (the Pony) around a separate race course. Both races were hard fought and very close. Great FUN! Get the race results on the RACING page. Photos More Photos

Junior Invitational Race #3 may be the most exciting race we have seen in several seasons. Please read the details of this race in The Garden Island story written by Dennis Fujimoto. Check out the RACING page to find the scores and photos.

Junior Invitational #2 had Fast Company holding the lead through the first two laps until she made a bad turn at the #2 can on the last inside lap. That gave OZone an opportunity to take the lead which she held to the finish. Papa a'u corrected to 3rd ahead of Speedy. See The WAVE photo sequence on the RACING page to see how she got the boost she needed. Mahalo to Joe and Sea for photos.

The NYC Junior Invitational Series Race #1 took place in blustery trades.  Fast Company took the early lead but lost it to OZone at the start of leg 2 due to an equipment malfunction. She recovered in time to pull in 2nd place and the third Olson, Speedy, took 3rd. Bonjolea took 1st in CLUB Class and Coyote, sailing without their regular junior crewman, Riley, had to settle for last + 1 point. See the photos that Joe Sager took and the race results on the RACING page.

Nawiliwili to Hanalei starts the Memorial Day Weekend and the Around-The-Island race ends it. Strong trades blew from start to finish and all three legs provided excitement. Joe Sager caught a few photos of the boats leaving Nawiliwili and some shots at the beach in Hanalei. Find the race results on the RACING page. Malihini & Lelele win Offshore #3 and OZone wins the ATI series.

Pete Peterson Memorial Rum Series Pau . .
This seven race series has come to an end. The racing fleet endured some awful weather throughout but the great parties at the NYC clubhouse made up for most of the rain and lack of wind. You can see the series points summary and pictures and stories of each race on the RACING page. Mahalo to Joe Sager and John Ullis for their photos and to Dennis Fujimoto for his coverage in The Garden Island. Mahalo to Nina Peterson, the widow of the series' honoree for her contributions and attendance. Mahalo to the individual boat crews who set up and cleaned up before and after each race. Mahalo to all who cheered from the jetty and to all who attended the clubhouse dinner parties.

Race #6 of the Pete Peterson Memorial took place in windy, bumpy seas. The 8-boat fleet was sent on a 3-lap, 6-mile course. Speedy won the start, but OZone won the race. Read the details in TGI by Dennis Fujimoto and see some great pictures that Joe Sager took along with the race results on the Racing Page.

OZone leads from start to finish in #5 . .  Pete Peterson Memorial #5 had seven boats competing in steady 15 knot trades. OZone took the early lead and held it to the finish. Fast Company missed this one - she sailed to Oahu to represent NYC in the Lipton Cup 1 sponsored by the Waikiki YC. Joe Sager took photos from the lighthouse and then from the cliff above #2. See the Racing Page for Dennis Fujimoto's TGI story and photos by Joe Sager and John Ullis.

Pete Peterson #4 full of controversy. . . There were two protest flags flying as OZone and Speedy passed by the jetty at the end of the first leg. Fast Company took the early lead in this race and held it to the end. OZone and Speedy finished second and third. It was determined that Coyote and Windspan did not finish leg 1 between the start/finish line and they each took an RAF (retired after finish). The Speedy protest was discussed, filed and then later withdrawn so the score sheet stands as is. Find it on the Racing Page with photos. Mahalo to Malihini's Rick Schunk for cooking the dawgs & burgers.

Pete Peterson Memorial Race #3 saw light and variable winds at the start right through the finish; at least the part of it that took place inside the boat harbor. Boats traded leads while they fell into and out of dead air holes while trying to get from mark to mark. Joe Sager sent some photos. See them and the race results on the Racing page. Be sure to read the TGI article by Dennis.

Race #2 of the Pete Peterson Memorial Series took place in light South Easterly winds with the threat of a squall that never actually developed. The light air caused the race committee to shorten the planned 3-lap race to just one 2.5 mile leg that took the boats out to the lighthouse buoy before they finished. John Ullis sent some photos. Click on the image to view the photo album or find them on the racing page along with the race results.

The Pete Peterson Memorial Series Race #1 saw eight boats on the starting line and a great crowd of spectators at the jetty to watch the action. And there was plenty of action. The lead changed several times from Speedy, to OZone, to Fast Company to Malihini. When the 3-lap, 6-mile course ended, Malihini finished first and took the Open Class; Fast Company finished first in Monohull Class and Bonjolea got first in CLUB Class. Lelele crew cooked lasagna for our dinner that followed at the clubhouse and Joe Sager provided us with some great photos. See all of the details on the Racing page.

The Spring Shakedown Series wrapped up on 3/24 with some exhilarating sailing. The winds were strong and the race was fast and several class winners were decided by tie breakers. Read Dennis Fujimoto's TGI story on the racing page. He explains the details. Fast company beat OZone in a points tie in Monohull Class by taking three firsts in the series to OZone's two firsts. See the series points summary for further clarification. What a great way to start the racing season!

The Spring Shakedown Series race #3 took place in light and shifty winds under the threat of rain. Only four boats braved the conditions and only three of them finished the race. Read about it in The Garden Island, story by Dennis FujimotoRaces #4 and #5 saw better weather, more boats and more wind. Lots of spectators showed up at the jetty to watch and Joe Sager and John Ullis took lots of great pictures of both of these races. Go to the Racing Page to see the race results of all of these races and to see some great photos. Race #5 took place on Saint Patrick's Day so NYC members and guests were treated to a delicious corned beef and cabbage dinner cooked by Staff Commodore Dick Olsen. Entertainment was provided by John Gillan and a great party was enjoyed by all.

Race #2 of the Spring Shakedown Series enjoyed trade winds blowing a steady 10-15 knots. Six boats made the start. Fast Company took an early lead and held it to the end, taking the win. Malihini held 2nd place throughout the 3-lap, six-mile course while Papa a'u and OZone were having a close race and Coyote and Windspan were neck and neck. When the finish scores were corrected for handicaps, Papa a'u and Malihini tied for 2nd place in Open Class. In Monohull Class Papa a'u took 2nd and OZone took 3rd. Coyote took 1st in Club Class. Windspan, a nice surprise out there on the race course, retired during the third lap (did not finish) due to other time commitments. Thank you, Joe Sager for your pictures. See them and the scores here.

The first buoy race of the Spring Shakedown Series got off to an interesting start. The wind was light and variable from 0 to 15 knots and extremely shifty in direction, though mostly from the South. The boats were given a Kona course start of three laps that had to be shortened to two laps due to the light air. MALIHINI took the lead early and held on to it through the finish but not far enough ahead of BONJOLEA or O ZONE to keep the win after handicaps were applied. See the RACING page for the scores and to read The Garden Island story by Dennis Fujimoto.

Opening Day was such fun! It's so good to be back on the water and racing once again. We are looking forward to a very busy season and it started with a great series of races in good wind on flat water. There were many spectators at the jetty watching all the fun. FAST COMPANY won the first race and the third race giving her the #1 spot for her day's work. The theme for the after race party at the clubhouse was "For the Love of Sail" and Marty Ellis worked her magic with the decorations. A new Opening Day Perpetual Trophy was dedicated to Andy Nickles for his hard work to make our vision of a clubhouse a reality. A plaque with FAST COMPANY's name on it will be placed on this new trophy for 1st place in Open and Monohull classes. TRINITY, a 28' F-28 trimaran won 1st place in Club class and will also be named on the perpetual trophy. See the RACING page for details.
