Kaua`i Channel Race . . .
ONE FOR THE BOOKS ... Wow. This was such a great event; the biggest and best one yet. We marvel at how it grows each year. This year saw twenty-two boats at the Ko Olina start. Nine of these boats were our own NYC members’ boats; seven of which sailed to Ko Olina to race back and two who are NYC associate members that keep their boats on O`ahu. The rest of the fleet was big, fast O`ahu racing boats that joined in for the fun, the party, and the points (this race is now one of the All Island HYRA Championship Series races). The race conditions were perfect: big winds, ENE, little to no rain.
Over one hundred people attended the delicious prime rib dinner catered by Brennecke’s, and when the Awards Presentation and Dance Party got going, there were at least one hundred fifty in attendance. The Pacific Sound Machine ROCKED, and the party was a huge success enjoyed by all.
Mahalo to our sponsors: Ko Olina Marina & Resort, Kaua`i Marriott Resort, Garden Island Inn, Keoki Brewing Company, Peter Taylor Engineering & Land Surveyor Inc, King Auto Center, and Kaua`i Wal*mart. Mahalo to our Silent Auction managers, Pete & Nina Peterson and Sande Lew.
Mahalo to our boat greeters: Carol Marsh, Mike & Colby Curtis, Jim Thompson & Kristen, Liz Olsen, Sherry Scott, Roger Cable & Eric Wing, Virginia Dunas, MaryAnn Holden & Joe Sager, Sande Lew, Bonnie Tiffany, Carole Wells, Marty Ellis, Sharon Gibson, and Jay Scheffer and gang. And a special mahalo to the greeters on this list who greeted more than one boat. Way above and beyond. MAHALO!
Mahalo to our party workers: Ken & Chris Dorland, Mavis Aiu, Doug & Sharon Gibson, Marty Ellis, Bob Hamby, MaryAnn Holden, John Bertrand, Dick Olsen, Carol Marsh, Maija Green, Tony LeHoven, and Phil Green.
Mahalo to all of our helpers at the party setup: Edd & Sheri Schepker, Dick Olsen, Doug Gibson, Doug & Bonnie Tiffany, Marty Ellis, Bob Hamby, MaryAnn Holden, Joe Sager, and Ken Dorland. Mahalo to the guys who showed up early on Sunday to clean up the mess: Tony LeHoven, George Deane, Bruce Heckman, Marty Ellis, Doug & Sharon Gibson, Mike & Colby Curtis.
It was a lot of work, putting this event together and pulling it off. Mahalo to everyone who pitched in and got the job done.

Wanted: 2009 Officers!
We are rapidly approaching the end of 2008 and will soon be entertaining our end-of-year General Membership Meeting where we must elect new NYC Officers for 2009. We need a new Rear Commodore, Secretary, and one Director. These officers will attend monthly Board of Directors meetings at the clubhouse and plan a smooth course to guide us through 2009.If you are interested in participating on the Board of Directors in any of these capacities, please let us know. If you would like to nominate someone (with their permission, please) to any of these positions, please contact Commodore Carol Marsh, Vice Commodore Bruce Raymond, or Rear Commodore Bruce Heckman. Please find their contact information on the back page of this newsletter.  Mahalo.

Make Your Mark (X) . . .
NYC is sponsoring a FUND RAISING opportunity for our members. We have purchased 4x4 ceramic tiles that you can “autograph” so that your name will become an indelible imprint on the forthcoming bar top at the NYC clubhouse. You DO want your name imbedded in the club’s bar top, DON’T YOU?  We sold some of these tiles at the KCR party. There are still more tiles that need names signed on them. If you would like to sign YOUR NAME on one of these tiles, please contact Sharon to arrange your payment of $25. You will then need to go to Clayworks at Kilohana (in Puhi near KCC) to do the deed. Once done, the tiles will be fired and then will be embedded into the new bar top at the NYC clubhouse.
Interested? Please call 742-2512 or email nyc@hawaiian.net to make arrangements.  You must pay first and then you can drop by Clayworks at your pleasure and be as artistic as you please.
Make your mark (X) on NYC.

Scuttlebutt . . .
In response to an email notice, NYC Member Gary Hoover emailed saying he is in Zambia until February, I don’t even know where that is, but it sure sounds exotic.
Congratulations to Lifetime Member Henry Mandel and his new bride Shirley who recently tied the knot, and to new NYC Members Mark Walsh & Terry Chang who are getting married any day now. May you all enjoy a lifetime of love and happiness.

NYC Stuff for Free . . .
We have some donated items that we cannot use and want to offer them to our members for free before we try to sell them or give them away via “craigslist”.
** We have one toilet; round bowl - new. It is yours if you want it. It was donated (thank you Godbehere’s), but we must use elongated bowls in our new bathrooms.
** We have a Sear's gas lawnmower that is in good working condition, but its gas tank leaks at the top seam. It would cost you $35 to install a new gas tank, or you can use it as is if you don’t fill it full. It’s free. Want it?  Let us know.
** We have a 15hp Suzuki Outboard Motor without a gas tank that was in good working condition the last time it was used on the Whaler. We have no further need for it. Want it?  Please call.
** If you want to take these donated items off our hands please call Sharon (742-2512) or email her at nyc@hawaiian.net to make the necessary arrangements. Mahalo.

Mahalos . . .
** Mahalo to Lifetime Member Rick Schunk who continues to work on the drywall in the new bathrooms, sanding it smooth, and getting it ready for painting.
** Mahalo to Lifetime Member Doug Gibson who continues to work on the bathrooms exterior; caulking, painting, trimming, etc. And thanks Doug for hanging the bulletin board where we can see it.
** Mahalo Lifetime Members Andy Nickles and Bruce Raymond: Andy for everything you do, and Bruce for getting the electric panel hooked up.
** Mahalo to the NYC Kaua`i Channel Race Committee for organizing an awesome race and party.

Wanted: NYC Webmaster . . .
If you know a little HTML code and have Web Authoring software that you know how to use and would like to see that updates to the NYC website are kept current, please volunteer to serve as NYC’s Webmaster.  Steve Mitchell has done a wonderful job, but his life schedule does not allow him to continue in this capacity.  Please contact Sharon (nyc@hawaiian.net) if you can help us out.  Mahalo.

Kaua`i Sailing Association . . .
Recently the Commodore, Carol Marsh, and Past Commodores Dick Olsen and Carl Stepath, formed the Hawaiian non-profit corporation Kaua`i Sailing Association (KSA).  The goal is to have the KSA recognized as a charitable 501(C)(3), which means all donations (cash, boats, cars, stocks, etc.) will qualify as fully tax deductible.  The KSA will be closely associated with NYC and will support NYC sailing instruction and safe boating activities.
