Friday, February 3rd – 10 am At 10 am meet the USCG, the USCG Auxiliary, and the DLNR at the small boat harbor loading dock and catch a ride to the corner where the breakwater meets the mountain. There you will disembark in shallow water, climb onto a stone landing, hike 3 minutes to the ocean side of the breakwater, and help clean up the cove where the land connects to the breakwater. Sound fun? Be sure to bring work gloves, water, your lunch, and wear tabbies or tennis shoes. This clean up is in preparation of the arrival of marine debris from the Japan Tsunami. Island School science classes will continue on a monthly basis to collect, sort, weigh, separate, and enter the data into a statewide database. Recycling and disposal of the debris will be ongoing through 2013. This project is part of the Bishop Museum Outreach program. Clubhouse Spring Cleanup Party . . . Saturday, February 4th – start at 9 am Opening Day is just a week away. Please help us spruce up the Clubhouse to get it ready for the big day. We need to clean the horizontal surfaces, the appliances, hang up the rest of the washed burgees, clean the barbecues, hang up pictures, and pull the weeds in the hedge and the front garden. There’s LOTS to do, and with your help we can get it done. You can start now to log your 10 hours of service this year to reduce your dues next year; and if you stay ‘til we’re done, we’ll feed you lunch. See you there? 2012 Racing Season . . . All that is required is to be checked out on the boat that you are interested in and then come on down and sail! To encourage the use of the dinghies, we have started to meet on Tuesday evenings at 4 pm. This is good fun, but if you have not been checked out already, you will need to make an appointment with Fleet Captain Carl Andersson at 808 639-3809. Call and set up a time. Donation Tiles – They’re Back ! ! ! Back by request, you can MAKE YOUR OWN 4-inch donation tile and have it hang above the bar at the NYC Clubhouse. Each tile will cost $50 (we did say “donation”). You send us your $$$, and we will send you a certificate that you redeem at ClayWorks behind Kilohana (next to KCC in Puhi). Follow the instructions on the certificate and go to ClayWorks to create your very own tile that will join the others as seen below.
Meet Your Fleet Captain . . . Aloha Sailors! I have been asked to write up a short biography of my sailing background, so here it is! I got the sailing bug at the age of 7 when I was sent to summer day camp in a small coastal village in Sweden. This is something most coastal kids in Sweden are given the opportunity to do. We were 10 kids who spent every gray and rainy day in Optis sailing circles on the bay. This went on for a few summers with the first few days always spent fixing up the boats. I’m not sure what made the biggest impression on me because to this day I cannot look at a boat without thinking about how she sails and what can I change to make her sail better. After almost 20 years of “fixer uppers” (every boat I have ever owned from the first Opti to my last day sailor), I found myself in California renovating a 65’ ketch which was commissioned and built by Col. Whitbred in 1952. Big plans were made to fix her up and then to cruise the Caribbean on her. But somewhere along the way I came down with Wife Syndrome which then progressed to Child Syndrome (best thing in my life). The boat of my dreams sailed on to the Caribbean while I was building houses in Santa Barbara. We left California (not fast enough) and settled on Kaua’i were my wife got to know a sailor named Saylor. One day the sailor named Saylor called me up and asked, “Hey, would you like to sail a boat to O`ahu?” After taking a long time to ponder this question (about 30 milliseconds), I called the sailor back and said, “Yes!” The sailing bug was back! (Thank you, Jim) That was four seasons ago and my beautiful daughter (11 on January 30) sails around Nawiliwili Bay in her pink El Toro or in one of the Toppers and I teach sailing in the club’s dinghies. Circle complete and life is good. Fleet Captain Carl Andersson Mahalos . . . >> Mahalo Louis Abrams and to Susan Ullis for your generous donations to the Kaua`i Sailing Association.
