Gene Wells Memorial Series Off to a Great Start. It was a beautiful day for the first race of the Gene Wells Memorial Series. Papa Au has a great race, cruising past the field in the light consistent air. Mapuana, a Gene Wells boat, came in 2nd place. Ozone grabbed 1st in Club division after a loopy start. Click here to read about it in the newspaper. Click here for results and here for pix. Thank you Sharon for the pix & captions!

Rum Series #1 was a Smack-a-Doodle.

Lots of near misses and a good solid hit punctuated the highlights of the first race of the 2006 Rum Series. With gusts of 30 knots, the blustery evening was quite exciting. Ozone and Mapuana met at the Red Nun #2 with some damage to Mapuana's stern quarter. Mapuana also grazed the buoy, did her 360 and went on to win the Monohull division. Ozone gracefully bowed out, (pun intended), and Malihini took first in the open class. Dan took some great pictures from Malihini. Thanks. Click here for results and here for pix.

Dick Talks Turkey!

The second event in the NYC enrichment series was very informative and fun. Rear Commodore Dick Olsen wowed the crowd with a dynamic slide show of his cruising adventures in Turkey. The hour long presentation was enhanced by some great Turkish appetizers prepared by Liz and Dick. This was the inaugural use of the other side of the NYC presentation board. Playday at the Beach a Hit! Click on the picture to see more. The sand castle contestants got busy at 10 a.m. working on their sculpture designs. There were two groups; one adults and one youngsters, and three individual contestants; two adult and one youngster. When the finish horn blew, the judge, Sonia Duran, a visitor from the Long Beach Yacht Club in California, carefully looked over the finished sculptures and made her difficult decision. Here are the contest results:

Ranney Warburton, NYC Member, on Fanning Island. Hey everybody!
Arrived here at Fanning on Thursday afternoon. Passage from Honolulu was just over 5 days. We had some unexpected excitement on the way in when the motor crapped out about a mile north of the pass and we had to get out the raft with the little outboard and nurse the boat into the channel. We had planned on getting there with the incoming tide which drives a 5-6 knot current into the lagoon so we luckily swept into English Harbour with the help of Mother Nature. On the way in we could see a couple of guys out at the left scoring overhead barrels The inside of the lagoon is about 5 miles wide and about 10 miles long with a fringing barrier reef with coconut, ironwood and breadfruit trees. We are anchored next to the main village and have already met some of the locals and went to a potluck last night on Chuck Corbett's boat with local fresh fish, crispy breadfruit chips and not quite warm Australian beer. It was great! A group of the local people from the village came and played music and sang with those wonderful harmonies that are such a part of the South Pacific. Joey and Trevor surfed overhead waves yesterday but the swell is on the way down. I had to sit it out because I tweaked my knee hurrying to get the raft out to keep the boat from going on the reef. I sure hope it gets better as this is not the time I want to be laid up. Laid back maybe but definitely not up! Breaking news, this just in: Trevor scores giant Ulua while out spearfishing. Check it out! Anyway I will update you as time permits. Aloha, Ranney

Keiki Fishing Tournament a Blast! Click on the picture to see way too many pictures of this monumental event. Thanks to Sharon, Tonya and Carmela for story and pix.

Ranging in age from 3 to 16, as many as 30 Kauai keiki and their ohana braved gray skies and frequent passing showers to participate in the Father's Day Keiki Fishing Tournament sponsored for the 6th year by the Nawiliwili Yacht Club. Keiki lined the docks and shores of the Nawiliwili Small Boat Harbor casting for "the big one" that would assure their early pick of the huge assortment of prizes generously contributed by the following sponsors: Wal*Mart, Keiki Kottage, Kauai Children's Discovery Museum, Hawaii Fishing News, Avon Rep. Ann Burton, Kazi Foods-Burger King & Kentucky Fried Chicken, Cost-U-Less, Déjà Vu, First Hawaiian Bank-Kapaa Branch, Kalapaki Beach Hut, Kauai Lagoons Resort, Lihue Fishing Supply, Long's Drug Store-Kapaa, True Blue Kauai-Kalapaki Beach Boys, Wallace Theaters and Pete & Nina Peterson. When the 1 PM horn sounded and fishing was pau the judges went to work while the young crowd anxiously inspected the prize table. Top anglers of the day were: Kiani Higa & Anikka Cadavona who tied for Biggest Fish Caught; Maka Bailey caught The Most Fish; Jensen Koga caught the Longest Fish (and the first fish of the day); Makane Daligcon caught the Fattest Fish; Aaron Salvador caught the Prettiest Fish; Trae Matsumoto caught the Cutest Fish; Kody Panui caught the Ugliest Fish; and Kaeden Fernandez caught The Most Unusual Fish. Prizes were then awarded for the assortment of other marine life brought in for judging including crabs, guppies and shrimp... Then came the "Fish Story" awards - and prizes were awarded as the keiki explained why they came in empty-handed. In the end, due to the generosity of our wonderful sponsors, no keiki went home without a prize and everyone had a delightful Father's Day. The Nawiliwili Yacht Club is so grateful to the Kauai Community for their continued support of this treasured event.

Stories from 2004 . . . in no particular order.

Hot News Flash! I actually got some pictures from one of our members! After my recovery ( I passed out from shock!), I managed to add them to our measly "pictures" section. Why are there so few member contributed pictures? I don't know but if this continues I'm gonna be forced to put up pictures of naked women . . . don't make me do it! Anyway go to the pictures section to see some pix of Chris Jordan's run in the Vic Maui 2004.

NYC Members go out to the Beyond . . . Two different NYC related excursions went to the "out" island of Nihoa. Nihoa, is located approximately 120 miles to the northwest of the "forbidden" island of Niihau. Anyway you slice the pie, it's a far, far, desolate place to go to. For some interesting info on this island, click here. Kevin Millet recently sailed his new boat, Kalewa, which he happened to have designed and built himself, to the island; taking with him a hand picked crew of certifiables. Also a recent member of the "165 mile club", Kendall Struxness recently completed a grueling canoe paddle to the island. For the full rundown of this adventure, click here. What about the pictures?? Click here, silly!

New Pix from a Member!. Joe Sager's recent trip to Tahiti was fantastic and he was gracious enough to share his photos. Click on da pix for more!

The Kauai Channel Race
Kalewa Takes it All!
First to Finish
First in Fleet
First in Multihull!

The Kauai Channel Race was a huge success! Great winds, great weather, a great band all made for a great party! 7 boats competed, including 2 boats from Oahu. Word is the sail over to Ko Olina was pretty burly. Kevin Millet of Kalewa reported apparent wind speeds in excess of 40 knots on the nose! We had 2 starts, the first at midnight and the 2nd at 0700. The party officially started at 6 p.m. We had a great dinner catered by Joe's on the Green with uncle Mikey cooking steak & fish. Yum. Lots of beer was supplied by George Wells of Keoki Brewing Company. The band was "Tongue & Groove" and tongue and groove they did, right up until the cops came at 11 p.m. We had some great donors for the silent auction and great buyers too! On top of all this fun & festivity, Ranney Warburton unveiled the new sign for the clubhouse! Way to go NYC members! For some cool pix, check in here. Check da results here.

Memorial Day action! Lots of pictures … click here for results and here for pix.
